The extremely exciting Schlithornbahn 20XX project – lifting table for cable car – is coming to an end after almost 2 years. Many personal and virtual meetings, many phone calls and countless hours of project planning and assembly later, we can be proud to have achieved such a masterpiece.

An impressive project is being built on the Schilthorn in the canton of Bern, Switzerland: The construction of new cable cars not only promises comfort for passengers, but also impresses with a logistical masterpiece in the transport of goods. A unique system for transporting goods has been developed on the route between Stechelberg, the valley station, and Mürren, the mountain station. A cable car for 85 people ensures that not only visitors, but also a wide variety of materials and general cargo reach their destination safely and efficiently - thanks to a clever underload transport system.

Nothing is left to chance. Normal general cargo is transported in specially manufactured containers that are hung under the cabins fully automatically by a precise crane system. This smooth automation not only speeds up the process, but also minimizes the risk of errors, so that the goods can overcome the steep heights quickly and safely.

lifting table for special loads

However, things get exciting when it comes to oversized special loads - these cannot simply be attached automatically. This is where the technical skills of those responsible for the project are needed: With the help of massive lifting tables installed underneath the cabins, the heavy load is lifted and brought into position. The lifting tables are first lowered to ground level in order to maneuver the transported goods underneath. As soon as everything is in place, the exciting moment of lifting begins. Centimeter by centimeter, the special load is carefully lifted under the cabin before it is then precisely attached to it.

Only when the lifting table is completely lowered again can the cabin begin its journey with the special load - a feat of strength that requires precision and coordination. Once the destination is reached, the procedure is reversed: the lifting table slowly raises the load again and the cabin is relieved. This creates a seamless and fascinating process that combines technology and logistics and makes the new cable car construction on the Schilthorn a true masterpiece.

planning and tender basis of the project

The start of the project was identical to all other previous lifting table projects. The customer sent us his specifications with the rough requirements.

2 scissor lifts, each with a load capacity of 10,000 kg and a platform size of 9 x 5 meters. The effective lift was specified as 2 meters. There were also a few special components.

After initial telephone calls, we decided to offer, develop and implement this project.

XXL scissor lift table consists of 4 smaller lifting tables

Due to the very large platform, it was not possible to deliver the hydraulic scissor lift table in one piece. For this reason, we decided to build 4 smaller lift tables and then connect them on site.

In the picture, 3 of these lifting tables have already been installed in the excavation pit. The fourth and final part is lifted into position by the construction crane with centimeter precision. Once there, our technicians aligned the lifting table precisely and screwed it to the remaining components.

We left out the middle platform covers for the test run so that all components of the XXL lifting table can be easily accessed for any repairs.

Commissioning, training and handover

After the test runs, the last platform covers were installed and commissioning was carried out.

We then provided comprehensive training to the customer – the cable car builder – and the future operator. Not only was the functionality explained, but also the mechanics, hydraulics and controls.

Four scissors lift the platform synchronously upwards

Four scissor packs with their own cylinders were installed under the lifting table. The four platforms are bolted together, but would not lift at exactly the same time if the load was unevenly distributed.

For this reason, we have installed a hydraulic multiple flow divider. This ensures even lifting even when the individual platforms are subjected to unequal loads.
