24 Underfloor lift tables for ATEX zone 1 on the airfield: from prototype to series production
A German mechanical engineering company approached us with a clear requirement: 24 Underfloor lift tables for the ATEX area of an airfield, designed for refuelling operations. After the initial discussions and the concept phase, we jointly decided in favour of a double scissor solution. We developed a prototype, validated the mechanics, safety and ATEX concept at the customer's premises and then transferred the tested design to series production of 24 systems.
The load capacity was set at 3000 kg. The platform size of 2250 x 1150 mm and the effective stroke of 2200 mm were determined after extensive testing.
A so-called canopy was also built on the lift table platform. Equipment such as a hose reel is positioned on the lift table - protected under the canopy. When lowered, the lift tables disappear invisibly into the ground. As soon as a refuelling or other service is required on an aircraft, the lift table is raised and the tools are made available.
The lifting tables themselves are in the ATEX Zone 1 in the outdoor area. The units and the control system were installed in a protected area outside the zone. This area was over 25 metres away, so we had to carry out a fixed piping of the hydraulic lines.
Project details of the ATEX lift tables
Steel substructure instead of concrete block
As can be seen in the enquiry drawing, the ATEX lift tables originally be erected on a concrete foundation.
During the planning stage, however, we had the idea of placing them on a specially designed steel frame. This made it possible to adjust the heights even better and significantly reduce costs.
The lifting tables are lifted onto the frames and bolted together during final assembly on the airfield.
Pre-assembly of the scissors and cylinders on the base frame
Planning processes is very important for series production of products and lifting tables in order to save time and costs.
Here, all the scissor packs and cylinders were assembled and mounted on the finished base frames.
The hydraulic hoses and electrical cabling have also already been added.
In the next step, the platforms were lifted onto the prepared packages, aligned and bolted together.
Delivery of the lift tables
Several articulated lorries were needed to deliver all 24 scissor lift tables including the 24 steel structures to the customer.
The loading and securing on the lorry was monitored by our technicians. It was important that no damage occurred during transport or loading. To be on the safe side, we also sent paint so that minor damage could be repaired directly on site.
