Underrun protection, railing and anti-slip platform
A Swiss machine manufacturer was looking for several height-adjustable work platforms for people. The customer intended to later mount the aerial work platforms onto their own rail chassis and integrate them directly into an existing machine system.
The initial consultation clarified the key parameters, and the subsequent meeting finalized the plans and further details. The result is six identical aerial work platforms, each with a 1,500 kg lifting capacity, a 7,500 × 2,000 mm platform, and a usable stroke of 1,400 mm. With a height of only 600 mm, the platforms remain compact despite their size and can be optimally integrated into the customer's existing facilities.

Additional security and monitoring equipment
The aerial work platforms were equipped with a dual-channel safety contact strip. If the contact strip is activated during the lowering movement, the dangerous movement can be interrupted via the safety control system.
Integrated oil level monitoring complements the technical monitoring of the hydraulic system. This allows changes in the oil level to be detected early and checked during maintenance.
The required safety devices always depend on the design, the intended installation situation, and the risk assessment of the entire system. For mobile elevating work platforms, the permissible load, the operating instructions, and the intended operating conditions must also be taken into account.

Six individual aerial work platforms from a single source
The challenge in this project lay not only in the platform's large dimensions. Crucially, it was the numerous interfaces with the customer's machine, the rail chassis, and the integrated staircase that were decisive.
Thanks to close coordination with the Swiss machine manufacturer, all drillings, mountings, platform recesses, and railings could be taken into account during the design phase. As a result, the customer receives six ready-to-connect aerial work platforms that can be integrated into their existing system without extensive rework.
The project demonstrates that hydraulic aerial work platforms can be adapted not only in terms of load capacity, platform size, and lifting height. Complex custom solutions with chassis, stairs, machine contours, and individual safety devices can also be directly integrated into the design.

Reinforced base frame for the rail chassis
The customer mounted the six aerial work platforms onto a custom-designed rail chassis. A conventional base frame was insufficient for this application, as the forces involved need to be specifically transferred via the chassis's mounting points.
Therefore, the base frame was designed as a stable, self-supporting structure. All necessary drill holes and threads were already incorporated during manufacturing. This allows the customer to connect their chassis directly to the aerial work platform without any subsequent modifications.
Additionally, the base frame was set back 300 mm on all sides. This provides sufficient space for the components of the customer's chassis, allowing for a compact overall design. Mobile lifting tables generally require a suitably designed base frame, as standard frames are typically designed for a flat, horizontal installation.
Platform with recess and additional reinforcement
The 7,500 mm long platform was manufactured precisely according to the customer's drawings. A specially shaped recess ensures that the work platform can be moved right up to the machine contour without colliding with existing components.
This allows employees to reach their work areas much more easily. At the same time, it prevents unnecessarily large gaps from forming between the machine and the work platform.
The platform was also reinforced at a designated point. The customer will later mount a toolbox there. The reinforcement reliably absorbs the additional weight as well as the stresses that arise during daily use.
Railings precisely adapted to the customer's machine
The design of the railings was coordinated with the customer to suit the machinery and the intended work areas. Fixed railings are located on both narrow sides. Additional railing elements measuring 2.37 m and 0.265 m in length were installed on one long side.
The opposite long side was fitted with a 5.13 m long, plug-in railing. This can be removed where direct access to the customer's machine is required. In the remaining areas, the railing elements define the platform and protect the personnel working on it.
The precise arrangement of the fixed and pluggable elements was particularly important. Ultimately, the aerial work platform had to be as enclosed as possible while simultaneously allowing unimpeded access to the relevant machine areas. Guardrails are among the essential structural elements of a work platform and serve to protect people and any equipment they carry.
Recording for the moving staircase
On one narrow side, the customer added a mobile staircase to the aerial work platform. This staircase allows employees to safely enter and exit the platform in its designated starting position.
To ensure the stage and staircase function permanently as a single unit, we designed the necessary mounting bracket directly and attached it to the base frame. The attachment points were tailored to the dimensions and connection points of the customer's staircase.
Thus, the staircase travels together with the entire work platform on the rail chassis. No additional modifications or separate transport solutions are required.

Yes. Depending on their design, mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) can also be configured for use on rails. For this to work, the base frame, mounting points, chassis, and control system must be considered as a single, integrated unit. In this particular project, the customer built the rail chassis. We prepared the MEWPs with a self-supporting base frame and the necessary holes and threads. Rail-mounted designs are a recognized and accepted type of mobile elevating work platform.
A stationary lifting table typically rests on its base frame on a suitably prepared surface. In contrast, with a mobile base, the forces are transferred via individual wheels, rollers, or mounting points. This altered load must be taken into account during the design process. Therefore, mobile base components must not be attached to a conventional base frame without technical inspection.
The load includes not only the people on the platform, but also tools, materials, toolboxes, and other equipment. For this project, the permissible load capacity is 1,500 kg. This value must not be exceeded during operation. The German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) also defines the nominal load as the sum of the permissible personnel, tools, and materials.
Yes. Both the platform contour and the guardrail elements can be manufactured according to customer drawings. On these aerial work platforms, the platform features a recess that follows the machine's contour. The guardrails were positioned so that employees can stand safely on the platform while still having access to the designated work areas. Removable elements must be included in the risk assessment and the operating concept of the entire system.
